About the Awards

Man and Woman of the Year
The Man and Woman of the Year are those individuals continually involved in an important undertaking that makes a positive statement for the LGBT community as a whole. These are not intended as popularity awards.

Morris Kight Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award, first given in 2003, recognizes an individual whose lifetime body of work has left a lasting major imprint on the LGBT community.

Berman/Shaffer Award
The Shaffer Award has been combined with the Berman Award and recognizes an individual or organization within the LGBT community that has made a noticeable and positive impression on the community. Steve Berman and Ralph Shaffer were both active in the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Community Services Center (as it was then known) in the 1970's. Shaffer was murdered by unknown assailants at the Gaywil Thrift Shop in Silverlake, which he managed for the Gay Center. Berman, the companion of CSW founder Morris Kight, helped start the Southern California Organization Against AIDS, the first-ever Gay HIV service organization. He collapsed and died at the end of a 5K run in San Francisco to raise money for AIDS research.

Harvey Milk Award
The Harvey Milk Award recognizes an individual who gives of himself or herself well beyond the call of duty in countless ways. Dedicated to the memory of assassinated San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk.
George Moscone Award
The George Moscone Award recognizes a non-gay individual who furthers human rights and does not shy away from involvement or speaking out on LGBT issues. Named for the late mayor of San Francisco, George Moscone.
Grand Marshal
The individual or organization serving as the standard bearer for the annual Christopher Street West Parade.

Celebrity Grand Marshal
The celebrity standard bearer for the annual CSW Parade.

Community Grand Marshal
The community standard bearer for the annual CSW Parade.

Sheldon Andelson Business Award
The Sheldon Andelson Award recognizes an individual or business that exemplifies non-discriminatory support (financial and otherwise) to the LGBT community. Named for Sheldon Andelson, Bank of Los Angeles founder and one of the founders of the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center.

CSW Special Community Award
The CSW Special Community Award acknowledges an outstanding person, organization, business, etc., that is identified as deserving special recognition for exceptional reasons.

CSW Rainbow Award
This award honored individuals and organizations facilitating diversity in the LGBT community.

CSW Arts Award
This award honored individuals and organizations furthering a positive image of the LGBT community in the arts.

Chuck Rowland Theatre Award
Honored individuals who have had a positive influence on the LGBT image in the theatre and the arts. Rowland started L.A.'s Celebration Theatre and was one of the founders of the Mattachine Society.

Dr. Howard Brown Award
Brown co-founded of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The award recognized an individual or group serving the community in a similar vein.

Dick Michaels Media Award
With partner Bill Rand, Michaels started The Advocate as one of the first gay newspapers in 1967. This award recognized an individual or organization serving the community in a similar vein.

Jerry Carlson/Lesegne Van Antwerp Award
Named for the founders of the Gay Men's Chorus and the Great American Yankee Freedom Band and awarded to an individual or organization seen as furthering their legacy.

Dr. Thomas Waddell Sports Achievement Award
Named for the founder of the Gay Games. Recognizes LGBT achievement in the world of sports.

Dag Hamarskjald Memorial Peace Award
Named for the former U.N. secretary-general and 1961 Nobel Peace Prize winner, and awarded to an individual seen as furthering his legacy.

Founding Fathers Award
This award is in recognition of a lasting legacy to the LGBT community.

Pat Parker Arts Award
This award recognizes an individual or organization that supports the LGBT spirit through the arts. Dedicated to the legacy of Pat Parker, a groundbreaking African-American lesbian poet and activist.

Connie Norman Award
The Connie Norman Award recognizes an individual or organization for outstanding achievement in fostering racial, ethnic, religious and gender unity within the LGBT community. Named for transsexual Connie Norman, who fought tirelessly for the rights of people with HIV/AIDS
